Joining a Local Sports Club

Last month I decided I needed to do more exercise, so I went to see a local sports club near my home. I wasn’t trying to become a professional athlete. (1) ........... I also wanted to meet new people, because most of my friends are busy with work or family. When I arrived, a coach called Sam welcomed me and showed me around. There were different groups: some people were playing basketball, others were training for a 5 km run, and a few were doing yoga. (2) ........... Sam told me that this was normal, and that beginners often feel the same. Sam asked me what sports I liked. I said I enjoyed running, but I got bored when I trained alone. (3) ........... Suddenly, running didn’t feel like a lonely activity anymore. The club also had a simple rule: everyone should encourage each other, not judge. If someone was slow, others waited. If someone was new, people explained the rules again. (4) ........... It made the whole place feel safe and friendly. After the session, I was tired but happy. I realised that doing sport regularly is easier when you have a plan and a community. (5) ........... Now I’m looking forward to next week already.

What to do

This part is one of the longest texts that you must read. 5 sentences were removed. Your task is to choose the right sentence in the right gap.

Strategy

  1. The first thing you should do is to read the whole text to get a general understanding of what it is about.
  2. Then, look at each numbered space in turn and choose one of the sentences to fit the gap. In order to do this, you not only need to check that the meaning is correct for the gap but also that it fits grammatically with the sentences before and after the gap.
  3. Once you have chosen the sentence that you think fits best, quickly check that the other sentences don’t fit and try to decide why they are wrong.
  4. Once you have found all the missing sentences, read the text once more to make sure that it all makes sense.
