Architecture in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is famous for its modern skyline and impressive buildings. Many visitors are surprised by how quickly the city has grown in recent years. (1) ........... This mix makes the city feel both traditional and futuristic at the same time. One of the most well-known places is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is huge, bright white, and decorated with beautiful patterns. (2) ........... At night, soft lights make the building look calm and magical. Another area that shows Abu Dhabi’s modern style is the Corniche, a long road by the sea with parks and tall buildings behind it. People walk, cycle, and take photos there, especially in the evening. (3) ........... From there, you can see glass towers that reflect the sunlight and change colour during the day. Abu Dhabi also has exciting new cultural buildings. For example, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a museum with a special roof that looks like a giant dome. (4) ........... This effect is sometimes called “rain of light”, and it makes the museum feel peaceful. If you ever visit Abu Dhabi, it is worth looking up as you walk around. (5) ........... You may notice small details, like shapes in windows or patterns on walls, that tell a story about the city and its people.

Strategy

  1. The first thing you should do is to read the whole text to get a general understanding of what it is about.
  2. Then, look at each numbered space in turn and choose one of the sentences to fit the gap. In order to do this, you not only need to check that the meaning is correct for the gap but also that it fits grammatically with the sentences before and after the gap.
  3. Once you have chosen the sentence that you think fits best, quickly check that the other sentences don’t fit and try to decide why they are wrong.
  4. Once you have found all the missing sentences, read the text once more to make sure that it all makes sense.
