Exam Practice

Many students want to do well in a Cambridge English exam, but they are not always sure how to prepare. A good way to begin is to understand the format of each task and to practise a little every day. In the Reading and Use of English paper, for example, you need to read carefully and pay attention to the words around each gap. Some answers depend (0) ON fixed expressions, while others are chosen because they fit the meaning of the whole sentence. It is also useful to look (1) .......... your mistakes after completing an exercise. This helps you see which kinds of words you find most difficult. Some students only check the correct answers and then move (2) .........., but this is not the best method. If you want to improve, you should think about why the other options are wrong. You should also try to build (3) .......... your vocabulary by learning common phrases and collocations. In addition, regular reading can have a positive effect (4) .......... your language skills. Short articles, stories and reviews can all help. Finally, do not worry if progress seems slow at first. With enough practice, you will become more confident and (5) .......... fewer mistakes. That is the best way to (6) .......... ready for exam day.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
