Work and Home

For many adults, trying to balance a career with family responsibilities can be a real challenge. Modern life often moves at such a fast (0) PACE that people feel under pressure both at work and at home. Many parents have to deal (1) .......... long working hours while also finding time to help their children with schoolwork, prepare meals and manage the house. As a result, they often end (2) .......... feeling exhausted by the end of the day. Some people are lucky enough to work from home, which can make it easier to look (3) .......... family needs, but this arrangement can also create problems. It is not always easy to switch (4) .......... from work mode and give full attention to loved ones. Experts often point (5) .......... that good planning is essential. Sharing responsibilities and setting clear boundaries can make a big difference. It is also important not to take (6) .......... more tasks than you can realistically manage. Otherwise, stress can build up and have a negative effect (7) .......... both health and relationships. In the end, finding the right balance depends (8) .......... making small but sensible decisions every day.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
