Data and Decisions

In modern organisations, data plays a central (0) ROLE in decision-making. Managers no longer rely only on instinct when they need to choose between several options. Instead, they often (1) .......... on figures, reports and patterns to guide them. Good data can help a company identify customer habits, reduce waste and respond more quickly to changes in the market. However, having access to information does not automatically (2) .......... better decisions. The data must be accurate, relevant and presented clearly. If staff collect the wrong information, they may (3) .......... the situation completely and choose a poor course of action. For this reason, many businesses invest in tools that can (4) .......... large amounts of information and turn them into useful insights. Even so, human judgement still has an important part to (5) ........... Numbers can show trends, but they do not always explain why something is happening. Decision-makers therefore need to (6) .......... data with experience, common sense and an understanding of context. In the end, the most effective organisations are those that make use (7) .......... data wisely rather than blindly. When this happens, they are more likely to (8) .......... sound decisions and achieve long-term success.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
