Living with Uncertainty

Modern life is full of situations in which we simply do not know what will happen next. Waiting for exam results, starting a new job or dealing with sudden changes can all leave people feeling anxious. The psychological impact of uncertainty is often greater than the (0) ACTUAL event itself, because the mind tends to imagine the worst. When people are faced with unclear situations, they often try to make (1) .......... of what is happening as quickly as possible. If they cannot find an explanation, they may dwell (2) .......... negative possibilities for hours. This can lead to stress, difficulty sleeping and a constant feeling of being (3) .......... edge. Experts say that one useful response is to focus (4) .......... what can still be controlled. Keeping a routine, talking to others and limiting time spent reading alarming news can all help. It is also important to bear (5) .......... mind that uncertainty is a normal part of life, not always a sign of danger. In the long (6) .........., learning to accept uncertainty may even make people more resilient. Rather than trying to avoid every unknown situation, they can build (7) .......... confidence by dealing with challenges step by step. In this way, uncertainty becomes something to manage, not something that completely takes (8) .......... your thoughts.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
