Keeping Friendships

In a busy adult life, friendships can easily be (0) TAKEN for granted. Work, family and daily responsibilities often get in the way, and we may assume that real friends will always be there. However, strong relationships don’t survive on good intentions alone; they need time and effort. One simple habit is to (1) .......... in regularly, even if it’s just a short message. Another is to make plans and then (2) .......... to them, rather than cancelling at the last minute. When a friend is going through a difficult period, it helps to (3) .......... an ear and listen without judging. At the same time, friendships should feel balanced: if you are always the one who makes the effort, you may start to (4) .......... advantage of. Of course, disagreements happen. The key is to (5) .......... things through calmly instead of letting small problems grow. If you’ve hurt someone, a sincere apology can (6) .......... a long way. And when life gets stressful, it’s worth remembering that friends can (7) .......... you up and remind you who you are. In the end, maintaining friendships is not about grand gestures, but about showing up (8) .......... and being reliable.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
