Streaming and Entertainment

Streaming services have (0) CHANGED the way we watch films and TV. Not so long ago, most people relied on scheduled programmes and had to (1) .......... their evenings around what was on. Now, with a few clicks, viewers can choose exactly what they want and watch it whenever it (2) .......... them. This convenience has had a huge impact on the entertainment industry. Traditional TV channels have had to (3) .......... up their game, investing in better series and online platforms to keep audiences. At the same time, streaming companies compete fiercely to (4) .......... subscribers by offering exclusive content. For viewers, the biggest advantage is variety, but there is also a downside. With so many options, it is easy to (5) .......... carried away and spend hours watching “just one more episode”. Some people even feel they are missing out if they don’t keep (6) .......... with the latest shows everyone is talking about. In the long run, the question is whether streaming will completely (7) .......... traditional broadcasting, or whether both will continue side (8) .......... side. Either way, entertainment is unlikely to go back to how it used to be.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
