English Learning Stages

People often think that learning English means moving through a simple list of levels, but the reality is far more complex. A student may be excellent at grammar and still (0) STRUGGLE to speak with confidence in real situations. In fact, progress usually depends (1) .......... several different skills developing at the same time. For example, some learners are very good at doing exercises in a book, but they find it hard to (2) .......... part in natural conversations. Others pick up new vocabulary quickly, yet have difficulty putting it (3) .......... practice when they write or speak. Teachers therefore try to create lessons that focus (4) .......... reading, writing, listening and speaking in balanced ways. Another common mistake is to expect grammar to (5) .......... immediate results. Grammar is important because it gives students a framework, but real improvement also comes from regular exposure to the language. That is why many experts (6) .......... on students using English outside the classroom as much as possible. In the end, the most effective learners are usually those who are willing to make mistakes, learn (7) .......... them, and keep going. Reaching a high level in English is not about being perfect; it is about making steady (8) .......... over time.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
