Verb Patterns

Learning irregular verbs can seem repetitive at first, but students usually discover that progress (0) COMES more quickly once they start seeing patterns. Some verbs change completely, while others keep part of their original form, and this can help learners (1) .......... sense of what they are studying. A common mistake is to try to memorise long lists without context. It is often more effective to (2) .......... attention to how irregular verbs appear in stories, conversations and exam tasks. For example, students may know the present form of a verb, but then fail to (3) .......... up with the correct past participle when they need it in speaking or writing. Teachers therefore advise learners to write their own example sentences and go (4) .......... them regularly. Another useful idea is to group verbs by similarity, because this can (5) .......... revision less stressful. Even so, students should not expect to learn everything at once. Language learning usually (6) .......... place over time, and real improvement depends (7) .......... frequent review. In the end, the students who do best are often those who (8) .......... on using irregular verbs actively instead of only reading about them.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
