Holiday Company

Choosing who to travel with can make a big difference to a holiday. Some people prefer going away with their family, while others would rather (0) SPEND their time with friends. Both options have advantages, and the best choice often depends (1) .......... your personality, budget and expectations. One important factor is money. Family holidays can sometimes be cheaper because parents may pay for accommodation or transport, which takes some pressure (2) .......... younger travellers. On the other hand, trips with friends often require everyone to share costs equally, so it is important to work (3) .......... a clear budget before booking anything. Another point is the type of activities you want to do. Friends are usually close in age and interests, so it may be easier to agree (4) .......... plans and enjoy the same kind of entertainment. Family holidays, however, can offer a stronger sense of comfort and support, especially if something goes (5) .......... during the trip. Finally, holidays are also about relationships. Travelling with friends can help you get to know them better, while family holidays give you the chance to catch (6) .......... and spend valuable time together. In the end, there is no single answer, as both choices can (7) .......... out well if people are flexible. What matters most is choosing companions you feel at ease (8) ..........

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
