Finding the Right Challenge

Many learners want English tasks that feel (0) CHALLENGING but not impossible. If an exercise is too easy, you may finish it quickly and learn very little; if it is too hard, you can (1) .......... up and lose confidence. A good B2 task should push you to notice common word partnerships and fixed phrases, rather than just translating single words. For example, you might need to choose a verb that naturally (2) .......... with a noun, or a preposition that is typically used after an adjective. It also helps if the text has a clear topic, so you can (3) .......... meaning from the context. When you meet an unfamiliar word, don’t panic: try to work out what it means, and only (4) .......... to a dictionary if you really have to. Finally, progress depends on regular practice. If you do a short cloze every day, you will (5) .......... up useful chunks and start using them automatically. Over time, you’ll become more (6) .......... at spotting the one option that fits both grammar and meaning. So aim for “medium-hard”: difficult enough to stretch you, but still (7) .......... reach. That way, you stay motivated and your vocabulary grows (8) .......... by step.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
