IELTS Practice Session

Many students imagine that success in an English exam depends mainly (0) ON knowing difficult words. In reality, examiners are more interested in whether candidates can carry (1) .......... instructions carefully, organise ideas clearly and respond to questions without going (2) .......... the point. In a test such as IELTS, strong candidates do not simply learn model answers by heart. Instead, they rely (3) .......... a range of language skills and show that they can deal with unfamiliar tasks calmly. For example, in the speaking test, a candidate may be asked to talk at length and then answer follow-up questions. This calls (4) .......... both fluency and the ability to express opinions precisely. In the writing paper, it is equally important to support your ideas with relevant details rather than make very general (5) ........... Meanwhile, in reading and listening, success often depends on recognising paraphrase and paying close attention to detail. Overall, the best preparation is to practise regularly, learn from mistakes and build (6) .......... confidence over time. Students who expect instant progress are often disappointed, but those who keep (7) .......... usually improve steadily. In the end, real ability tends to stand (8) .......... more than memorised tricks.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
