Fashion Trends

The fashion industry is often described as one of the most competitive in the world, and for many people it is (0) BY FAR the most influential when it comes to personal style. Designers are always trying to produce collections that are more original (1) .......... those of their rivals, while large brands compete to appear more affordable but just as desirable. However, not every trend is as practical (2) .......... it looks on the catwalk. Clothes that seem elegant in a magazine may be far less comfortable in everyday life. In recent years, social media has had a greater impact (3) .......... fashion than traditional magazines. A single post by a famous influencer can lead (4) .......... thousands of people buying the same jacket or pair of trainers. As a result, some trends spread faster than ever before, although they may disappear just as (5) .......... . For consumers, price is not always the most important factor. Many people are willing to pay more for items that are made (6) .......... better materials or produced in a more ethical way. In fact, some smaller companies are now seen as more trustworthy than the biggest names, because they focus (7) .......... quality rather than quantity. Whether a brand succeeds or fails often depends (8) .......... how well it balances style, cost and responsibility.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
