Screens and Systems

Social media and artificial intelligence are now so common that many people use them without giving them much (0) THOUGHT. Social platforms allow users to keep (1) .......... touch with friends, follow the news and share opinions in seconds. At the same time, AI systems are being used to suggest videos, filter content and even (2) .......... out whether a post is likely to interest a particular user. This can make online life more convenient, but it also raises serious questions. People sometimes (3) .......... for granted that the information they see has been selected fairly, when in fact it may be shaped by hidden rules. As a result, users may end (4) .......... spending more time online than they intended. Some experts are also concerned that young people may rely (5) .......... heavily on online approval and lose confidence in their own judgement. For this reason, it is important to develop a more critical attitude. We should learn to (6) .......... out reliable sources, question dramatic headlines and think carefully before sharing content. AI can be useful, but we need to remain in (7) .......... of the choices we make online. Otherwise, instead of using technology wisely, we may simply be (8) .......... along by it.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
