Home Office Benefits

Working from home has become far more common in recent years, and many employees now see it as a serious alternative to office life. One obvious advantage is that people no longer have to (0) WASTE time travelling to and from work every day. As a result, they can use that extra time more effectively, whether for exercise, family life or simply getting more sleep. Another benefit is that workers often find it easier to concentrate when they are away from the noise and interruptions that can (1) .......... up in a busy office. In addition, many people say they are more productive because they can organise their day (2) .......... a way that suits them best. This flexibility can also lead (3) .......... better mental health, as employees may feel less stressed and more in control. Of course, working from home is not perfect. Some people miss the social side of office life or find it hard to switch (4) .......... at the end of the day. However, with clear routines and a suitable workspace, these problems can often be dealt (5) .......... successfully. For both employers and staff, remote work can (6) .......... money, reduce commuting and even lower pollution levels. It is therefore no surprise that many companies are now keen to carry (7) .......... offering this option in the future. In the right circumstances, working from home can be of great (8) .......... to everyone involved.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
