Online Identity

For many people, online communities have become a normal (0) PART of everyday life. Whether they are discussing hobbies, sharing advice or supporting one another, users often feel they (1) .......... to a group that understands them. This sense of belonging can have a strong effect (2) .......... personal identity, especially during the teenage years, when people are still trying to work (3) .......... who they are. In some cases, online groups encourage members to speak more openly and develop confidence. People may also pick (4) .......... new attitudes, interests or ways of expressing themselves from others in the community. Over time, these habits can become so familiar that they form part of how users see themselves. However, the influence is not always positive. Some people feel pressure to fit (5) .......... and may hide parts of their real personality in order to be accepted. Others depend too heavily (6) .......... online approval, which can damage their self-esteem. For this reason, it is important to take a balanced (7) .......... and remember that identity is shaped by real-life relationships as well as digital ones. Used wisely, online communities can help people grow, rather than hold them (8) ..........

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
