Everyday Decisions

Some people believe that making choices is easy, but even small decisions can be more difficult than they first (0) SEEM. In daily life, we are often faced with several options and have to decide which one is the most suitable. When people are in a hurry, they may (1) .......... a decision without thinking carefully enough. This can lead (2) .......... unnecessary mistakes or disappointment later on. On the other hand, some people spend so much time comparing possibilities that they find it hard to (3) .......... up their minds at all. In many situations, the best approach is to rely (4) .......... common sense and accept that no choice is ever completely perfect. For example, when choosing a restaurant, a person might look at the menu, the prices and the location before making a final (5) ........... In the same way, students often have to choose (6) .......... different subjects or courses. Although advice from friends can be helpful, it is usually better to base your choice (7) .......... your own interests and goals. In the end, good decisions often depend (8) .......... a balance between careful thought and confidence.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
