Peer Mentoring

Many schools and workplaces have (0) INTRODUCED peer mentoring programmes to help newcomers settle in more quickly. The basic idea is simple: someone with a bit more experience offers guidance, answers questions and helps a new member feel part of the group. At first, some people worry that mentoring will (1) .......... too much time, especially when everyone is already busy. However, when it is organised well, it can actually (2) .......... off by reducing confusion and preventing small problems from growing. A good mentor doesn’t try to act like a boss; instead, they (3) .......... an eye on how the newcomer is coping and step in only when needed. For the person being mentored, it can be a relief to have someone to (4) .......... to without feeling judged. They may be more willing to ask “basic” questions that they would otherwise keep to themselves. Mentors benefit too, because the role often helps them (5) .......... up confidence and communication skills. Of course, a programme won’t succeed unless both sides are (6) .......... to it. Clear expectations, regular check-ins and a bit of training can make a big (7) .......... . In the end, peer mentoring can (8) .......... a stronger, more supportive community.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
