A Sudden Change in the Weather

Most people check the forecast before they leave home, but the weather can still (0) CATCH you out. Last Saturday, I set off for a long walk, expecting a bright morning and only a light breeze. However, within an hour the sky had (1) .......... over and the temperature dropped sharply. I hadn’t brought a proper jacket, so I tried to (2) .......... do with a thin hoodie. Soon, heavy rain started to fall and I realised I was completely (3) .......... for it. I took shelter under a tree, but the wind was so strong that it (4) .......... the rain straight into my face. A couple nearby offered me an umbrella, which was kind, but it didn’t help much in the (5) .......... conditions. By the time I got home, my shoes were soaked (6) .......... and I was shivering. Still, the experience taught me a useful lesson: it’s worth keeping an eye (7) .......... the sky, and if there’s even a small chance of rain, take waterproofs just (8) .......... case.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
