Critical Journalism

In a healthy democracy, the press is often (0) CALLED the “fourth estate” because it can influence how power is used. Critical journalism, in particular, aims to hold politicians and companies (1) .......... for their decisions, rather than simply repeating what they say. This kind of reporting can be uncomfortable, but it is sometimes the only way to bring hidden problems (2) .......... the open. Of course, journalists must be careful not to jump to (3) .......... before checking the facts. When a story is based on rumours, it can damage reputations and (4) .......... trust in the media. That is why responsible reporters rely on evidence, speak to several sources, and make sure they are not being (5) .......... on by someone with a personal agenda. At the same time, readers also have a role to play. If we only follow news that (6) .......... our opinions, we may miss important information. A good habit is to compare different outlets and (7) .......... attention to how claims are supported. In the end, critical journalism is not about being negative; it is about asking tough questions so that the public can (8) .......... up its own mind.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
