A Digital Detox Weekend

When my friend Lena suggested a weekend without phones, I thought she was joking. Like most people, I’m used to (0) CHECKING messages whenever I have a spare moment. But Lena insisted that constant notifications were stopping her from switching off properly, and she wanted to (1) .......... a change. At first, I worried I’d miss something important. However, once we arrived at the small guesthouse by the lake, it became easier to (2) .......... my mind off work. We went for long walks, cooked simple meals, and even played board games, which felt strangely relaxing. The hardest part was not reaching for my phone out of (3) .......... . I kept patting my pocket as if the device might suddenly appear. Lena laughed and said it was a (4) .......... sign that we needed the break. By Sunday afternoon, I realised I’d been sleeping better and paying more attention to small details, like the sound of birds in the morning. I wouldn’t claim a detox solves everything, but it can (5) .......... you of how much time disappears online. Back home, I turned my phone on and found nothing dramatic had happened. In (6) .......... words, the world had carried on. Now I try to (7) .......... down on screen time during the week, and I’m more careful about what I (8) .......... attention to.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
