A Linguaskill Reading Practice

When I first decided to (0) TAKE the Linguaskill test, I assumed it would feel like any other online exam. However, I soon realised that good preparation is not just about learning new words, but also about understanding how the tasks are (1) .......... . One useful step is to do a short diagnostic test so you can (2) .......... out which question types slow you down. Then, set a realistic schedule and stick (3) .......... it, even on busy days. Many candidates make the mistake of reading every text in detail, but in a timed exam it is often better to (4) .......... the text first, looking for names, numbers and topic sentences. Another key point is to build your vocabulary through collocations, not single words. For example, you might (5) .......... across the phrase “reach a conclusion” and notice how it is used. Also, don’t ignore your mistakes: if you get an answer wrong, try to (6) .......... out why the correct option fits the context. Finally, remember that confidence grows (7) .......... practice. If you keep working steadily, you are far more likely to (8) .......... well on test day.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
