The Power of Imagination

Imagination is often seen as something linked mainly to childhood, but in professional life it can also play a major (0) ROLE. Far from being a waste of time, imagination helps people come (1) .......... with fresh ideas, solve problems and adapt to unexpected situations. In many workplaces, employees are expected not only to follow instructions but also to think (2) .......... and suggest improvements. A good imagination can also lead to better communication. When people are able to put themselves (3) .......... someone else’s position, they usually respond with greater understanding. This is particularly useful in jobs that involve teamwork, negotiation or customer service. In such situations, imagination is not simply about inventing stories, but about seeing different (4) .......... and predicting possible reactions. However, imagination is most effective when it is backed (5) .......... practical knowledge. Creative ideas may sound impressive, but they need to be realistic if they are to be put (6) .......... practice. For this reason, successful professionals often combine original thinking with careful planning. In the end, imagination should not be regarded as the (7) .......... of a few artistic people. It is a skill that can be developed and turned (8) .......... a real advantage in almost any career.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
