Calisthenics Skills

Calisthenics has (0) BECOME hugely popular in parks and gyms, partly because you don’t need much equipment to get started. Still, when you first see someone holding a full planche or a front lever, it can look almost (1) .......... . The truth is that these skills are built step by step, and progress often depends on sticking to a sensible plan. Most beginners make the mistake of trying to (2) .......... straight to the hardest variation. A better approach is to break the movement down into progressions and focus on good form. For example, you might start with tuck holds and gradually (3) .......... the lever by extending your legs. It also helps to train consistently, but not to the point of injury. If your wrists or shoulders start to hurt, it’s wise to (4) .......... back and work on mobility and technique. Another key factor is patience: you can’t (5) .......... strength overnight, no matter how motivated you feel. Finally, don’t train alone in your head. Sharing goals with friends can keep you (6) .......... , and a coach can point out small mistakes you might (7) .......... . With time, those “impossible” holds start to feel (8) .......... within reach.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
