Across Generations

In many communities, people are beginning to (0) REALISE that strong intergenerational relationships can improve everyday life. When younger and older people spend time together, they often (1) .......... down stereotypes that would otherwise keep them apart. A teenager may discover that a grandparent’s advice is not old-fashioned at all, while an older person may (2) .......... up new skills, such as using a smartphone, more quickly than expected. These connections don’t happen automatically, though. They usually (3) .......... effort from both sides, and they work best when everyone feels listened to. Schools that invite older volunteers into classrooms often report a calmer atmosphere, because pupils learn to (4) .......... respect in a practical way. Meanwhile, older visitors benefit from feeling useful rather than (5) .......... away at home. At a family level, regular contact can also help people (6) .......... with difficult periods, such as exams, illness, or job changes. Even a short conversation can (7) .......... a difference, especially when someone feels alone. In the long run, communities that encourage these links are more likely to (8) .......... together when times are tough.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
