Remote Team Management

Managing remote teams has become a normal part of modern working life, but it still presents a number of challenges. Team leaders cannot simply rely (0) ON casual conversations in the office to understand how everyone is feeling. Instead, they have to make a special (1) .......... to keep communication clear and regular. One common problem is that employees may feel isolated, especially if they rarely meet their colleagues face to face. This can have a negative (2) .......... on motivation and job satisfaction. Managers therefore need to create opportunities for staff to work together and build trust, even when they are based far (3) .......... from one another. Another difficulty is performance management. In a traditional office, it is easier to observe how tasks are progressing, but in remote settings managers must focus (4) .......... results rather than time spent online. They also need to set clear expectations and check that everyone is working (5) .......... the same goals. Finally, successful remote teams depend on technology, but tools alone are not enough. Without proper training and support, even the best systems can (6) .......... down. For this reason, companies should invest in both software and people, so that problems can be dealt (7) .......... quickly and cooperation can continue to (8) .......... smoothly.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
