Exam Preparation

Preparing for a Cambridge-style English exam involves more than simply learning long lists of words. Successful candidates usually spend time becoming familiar with the task types they are likely to (0) FACE in the test. In the Multiple Choice Cloze, for example, students need to pay close attention to the context, because the correct answer often depends (1) .......... a fixed phrase or common collocation. It is not enough to know the general meaning of a word; you must also know which other words it naturally (2) .......... with. Another useful strategy is to read the whole text first, rather than trying to fill each gap immediately. This helps you build up a general idea of the topic and may (3) .......... you from choosing an option too quickly. Good learners also make a habit of checking why the other options are wrong, which can (4) .......... their understanding of vocabulary patterns. In addition, regular practice under timed conditions can have a positive (5) .......... on confidence. Even strong students sometimes make mistakes because they rush or fail to (6) .......... out for small grammatical clues. For this reason, teachers often advise learners to (7) .......... over their answers carefully before handing in the paper. With patience and steady practice, most students can (8) .......... real progress.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
