Travel and Perspective

Many people say that travel (0) OPENS your mind, but it is not just a catchy phrase. When you leave your usual routine behind, you start to notice details you would normally (1) .......... . Even simple things, like how people greet each other or queue for a bus, can make you (2) .......... your own habits. Of course, travel is not always comfortable. You might have to (3) .......... with delays, unfamiliar food, or getting lost in a new city. Yet these small challenges often teach you patience and help you become more (4) .......... to change. If you make an effort to talk to locals, you can (5) .......... up learning expressions and customs that never appear in textbooks. Another benefit is that travel can (6) .......... down stereotypes. When you meet people face to face, it becomes harder to judge them based on headlines or rumours. Over time, you may (7) .......... to see that there is more than one “normal” way to live. In the end, the real value of travel is not the photos you post online, but the new viewpoint you bring (8) .......... with you when you return home.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
