Asbestos Awareness

Asbestos was once (0) CONSIDERED a miracle material. It was cheap, strong and resistant to heat, so it was widely used in buildings, ships and even household products. For decades, many people had no (1) .......... that breathing in asbestos fibres could be extremely harmful. The problem is that the fibres are so tiny that they can (2) .......... deep into the lungs. Over time, this may lead to serious illnesses, which often do not (3) .......... up until many years after exposure. Because of this delay, some workers only discovered the risk long after they had (4) .......... jobs. Today, asbestos is banned or strictly controlled in many countries, but it can still be found in older properties. If you are planning to renovate, it is essential to (5) .......... out whether asbestos is present before you start. The safest approach is to (6) .......... on trained professionals, rather than trying to remove it yourself. In short, asbestos is not something to panic about, but it is something to take (7) .......... . A careful inspection and the right advice can (8) .......... a great deal of trouble later on.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
