Flexible Learning

Modern education is changing quickly, and many students no longer follow one fixed route through their studies. Instead, they benefit from programmes that allow them to move at their own speed and choose subjects that match their goals. This kind of system is becoming more common because it can (0) MEET the needs of a wider range of learners. Flexible learning paths can (1) .......... students to combine school, work and family responsibilities more successfully. They also make it easier for people to return to education after time away, without feeling they have fallen (2) .......... permanently. In addition, learners are often more motivated when they can focus (3) .......... areas that are relevant to their future plans. Of course, flexibility does not mean a lack of structure. Students still need guidance so that they do not (4) .......... behind or choose courses that do not support their long-term aims. Teachers play an important part in helping them make informed decisions and (5) .......... track of their progress. When this support is available, students are more likely to (6) .......... with their studies, even when life becomes busy. In the end, education should not be a system that only suits one type of learner. It should open (7) .......... opportunities for people with different backgrounds and abilities, and allow them to (8) .......... their potential in their own way.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
