AI in the Classroom

Artificial intelligence is (0) BECOMING a familiar part of education, from grammar-checking tools to apps that create personalised practice. Supporters say AI can help teachers by taking (1) .......... repetitive tasks, such as marking short quizzes, and by offering instant feedback to students. However, some educators worry that learners may (2) .......... too heavily on AI and stop developing independent study habits. If a student can generate an essay in seconds, it becomes harder to (3) .......... whether the work truly reflects their ability. Schools are therefore trying to set clear rules about when AI is acceptable and when it counts as cheating. Another concern is fairness. Not every family can (4) .......... the latest devices or paid subscriptions, so AI could widen the gap between students. There are also questions about privacy, because many systems collect data in (5) .......... to improve their results. Despite these issues, AI is unlikely to disappear. The most realistic approach may be to teach students how to use it (6) .........., for example by checking sources and rewriting suggestions in their own words. Used well, AI can (7) .......... up time for teachers to focus on discussion and creativity, rather than paperwork. The challenge is to make sure technology supports learning instead of (8) .......... it.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
