Exam Practice Text

Preparing for a Cambridge B2 exam can seem challenging at first, but many students improve quickly once they understand what the test is really looking (0) FOR. In the Use of English paper, success often depends (1) .......... more than just knowing individual words. Candidates need to recognise common expressions, fixed phrases and the way words naturally go (2) .......... in context. A good way to prepare is to read short texts regularly and pay attention to vocabulary chunks rather than single items. For example, if you come (3) .......... an unfamiliar word, try not to panic. Instead, look carefully at the words around it and think about which option best fits the meaning of the sentence. It also helps to keep (4) .......... of useful collocations and review them often. On the day of the exam, it is important not to rush. Some answers may seem obvious, but others require you to think things (5) .......... properly. If you are unsure, eliminate the options that clearly do not fit. This increases your chances of making the right (6) .......... . Above all, regular practice can (7) .......... a real difference to your confidence and performance. With patience and effort, students usually (8) .......... progress sooner than they expect.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
