Online Identity

For many people, the internet is no longer just a place to find information; it is also where they (0) BUILD parts of their identity. Online communities, whether based on hobbies, gaming, study or social causes, can have a strong influence on how users see themselves. By taking (1) .......... in discussions, sharing opinions and receiving feedback, people often begin to feel that they belong to a group. This sense of belonging can (2) .......... confidence, especially for those who struggle to express themselves in face-to-face situations. At the same time, members may (3) .......... up the language, values and habits of the group without fully realising it. Over time, this can shape not only how they behave online, but also how they act in everyday life. However, the influence is not always positive. Some users become so eager to fit (4) .......... that they hide their real views or copy others. In extreme cases, people may even lose (5) .......... of who they are outside the screen. For this reason, it is important to stay aware (6) .......... the effect that online spaces can have. Used wisely, such communities can help people grow, (7) .......... they should not completely take (8) .......... real-world relationships and experience.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
