Choosing What to Wear

Choosing What to Wear When you open your wardrobe in the morning, it can be hard to decide what to put (0) ON. Some people prefer to keep things simple, while others like to (1) .......... up their outfits with bright colours or unusual accessories. A good starting point is to think about the occasion. If you are going to a job interview, you might want to make a good (2) .......... by wearing something smart and well-fitting. On the other hand, if you are meeting friends, you may choose something more (3) .........., such as jeans and a hoodie. It also helps to pay attention to the weather. A light jacket can (4) .......... in handy on a cool evening, while a thick coat is essential when temperatures drop. And if you are planning to do a lot of walking, it is worth choosing shoes that are (5) .......... rather than just fashionable. Finally, many people try to (6) .......... advantage of sales to update their wardrobe without spending too much. However, it is easy to get (7) .......... away and buy items you will hardly ever wear. A sensible rule is to (8) .......... to clothes that you can mix and match with what you already own.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
