Crowdfunding Platforms

Crowdfunding platforms have changed the way new ideas are financed. In the past, inventors, artists and small business owners often had to (0) TURN to banks or wealthy investors for support. Today, however, they can present their projects online and ask ordinary people to contribute small amounts of money. This approach has opened (1) .......... opportunities for people who might otherwise never get their ideas off the ground. It also allows creators to test public interest before they (2) .......... ahead with production. If a campaign attracts enough support, it can give both money and confidence to the people (3) .......... it. At the same time, crowdfunding is not without risk. Some projects fail to deliver what they promised, and backers may end (4) .......... disappointed. In addition, campaign owners need to set clear goals and communicate regularly in order to build (5) .......... with supporters. A successful campaign usually depends (6) .......... careful planning, a realistic budget and an appealing message. Even so, many people see crowdfunding as a positive development because it can bring creative ideas to life and give communities the chance to (7) .......... part in innovation. As these platforms continue to grow, their influence is likely to have a lasting (8) .......... on the world of business and culture.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
