A Simple English Test

Many people think a basic English test is (0) EASY, but it can still show what you really know. In a short placement test, you may be asked to choose the correct word, complete a sentence, or pick the best reply in a dialogue. The aim is not to trick you, but to find (1) .......... level you are at. A good test usually starts with very common grammar, such as present and past tenses, and then moves (2) .......... to slightly harder points like comparatives or conditionals. Vocabulary is also important, especially everyday words that you (3) .......... across in real life, for example in emails, signs, or short news stories. To get a fair result, you should work (4) .......... and avoid guessing too quickly. If you don’t know an answer, it can help to read the whole sentence and look (5) .......... clues like time expressions or prepositions. Finally, remember that a test score is only a guide. The best way to improve is to keep (6) .......... English regularly, and to (7) .......... mistakes as part of learning. With time, you will (8) .......... progress and feel more confident.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
