Remote Learning Challenges

Remote learning became (0) COMMON during recent years, and many students quickly discovered that studying from home brings both freedom and difficulty. On the one hand, online classes allow people to save time because they do not have to travel to school. On the other hand, learners often find it hard to stay focused when they are surrounded (1) .......... distractions such as phones, family noise, or social media. Another problem is that students may fall (2) .......... if they do not organise their time well. In a traditional classroom, teachers can easily notice when someone is confused, but online this is less obvious. As a result, some learners keep quiet instead (3) .......... asking for help. Technical issues also play an important (4) .......... in the learning experience. A weak internet connection or an old device can interrupt lessons and make it difficult to keep (5) .......... with the rest of the class. In addition, many students miss the chance to interact face (6) .......... face with classmates, which can make learning feel lonely. To succeed, students need to set (7) .......... clear routine, take regular breaks, and make the most (8) .......... digital tools provided by their teachers.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
