Classroom Debate

Many teachers now believe that debate should (0) PLAY a larger role in education. In a well-managed discussion, students do more than simply repeat facts: they learn to listen carefully, respond (1) .......... different opinions and support their ideas with evidence. This process can also build confidence, especially for those who are usually reluctant to speak in (2) .......... of others. Debate is not only useful in language lessons. In science, history or even maths, it can encourage learners to think more deeply and to question information rather than taking it (3) .......... granted. As a result, they become more aware (4) .......... how arguments are formed and how weak points can be identified. Of course, classroom debate needs clear rules. Without them, louder students may dominate, while quieter ones may feel left (5) ........... A good teacher makes sure that everyone has the chance to contribute and that disagreement remains respectful. When this happens, debate can lead (6) .......... better cooperation as well as sharper thinking. For that reason, many schools are beginning to see debate not as an extra activity, but as an essential part of preparing students (7) .......... the future. After all, in adult life people are often required to (8) .......... decisions, defend their views and solve problems with others.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
