Online Connections

Social media has transformed the way people build and maintain relationships. What once depended on face-to-face contact can now be managed with a few taps on a screen. In many respects, this has widened our social circles, allowing us to keep (0) IN touch with friends, relatives and colleagues across long distances. At the same time, however, some critics argue that these platforms encourage superficial exchanges rather than genuine bonds. One reason for this is that users often feel under pressure to present themselves in the best possible (1) .........., which can make interaction seem artificial. People may also (2) .......... into the habit of measuring friendships by likes, comments and followers, rather than by trust or mutual support. As a result, meaningful communication can be (3) .......... by the need to appear constantly interesting or successful. Even so, social media can still play a valuable role when used wisely. It can help people (4) .......... up with old friends, join communities of shared interest and offer support during difficult times. In the end, social media is best seen not as a replacement for human connection, but as something that should (8) .......... it.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
