Across Cultures

People often talk about intercultural exchange as if it were simply a pleasant extra, but its value goes far beyond tourism or polite conversation. When people spend time with those from different backgrounds, they are forced to (0) LOOK at their own assumptions more critically. In many cases, this leads to a greater (1) .......... of how values, habits and beliefs are shaped by culture rather than by nature. As a result, participants frequently become less (2) .......... to judge unfamiliar behaviour too quickly. Intercultural exchange can also have practical benefits. In academic and professional settings, people who have worked across cultures are often better able to (3) .......... with misunderstanding before it becomes conflict. They may also be more willing to (4) .......... on alternative perspectives when solving complex problems. Far from weakening a person's identity, meaningful contact with other cultures can (5) .......... it by encouraging reflection and self-knowledge. Perhaps most importantly, intercultural exchange helps people move (6) .......... stereotypes. Instead of relying on simplified ideas, they begin to recognise individuals as more than representatives of a nation or tradition. This does not mean that differences disappear; rather, they are placed in a broader (7) ........... In this way, exchange creates the conditions (8) .......... trust, cooperation and genuine curiosity can grow.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
