Social Isolation

In recent years, increasing attention has been (0) PAID to the effects of social isolation on both mental and physical health. While solitude can sometimes be beneficial, prolonged isolation can have serious consequences that are often difficult to (1) .......... at first. Researchers have found that people who are cut (2) .......... from regular human contact may be more likely to experience anxiety, depression and difficulties with memory. In addition, a lack of meaningful interaction can have a negative (3) .......... on sleep quality, motivation and even the immune system. What makes social isolation particularly troubling is that it often develops gradually. A person may begin by turning (4) .......... invitations or avoiding conversation, without fully realising the long-term effects of these habits. Over time, this behaviour can become deeply (5) .........., making it harder to reconnect with others. Experts therefore stress the importance of taking small but consistent steps to maintain relationships, whether by joining a club, speaking to neighbours or simply reaching (6) .......... to a friend. Although technology can help people stay in touch, it is not always a complete substitute (7) .......... face-to-face interaction. For this reason, communities are being encouraged to (8) .......... more support systems for those at risk of becoming isolated.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
