Negotiation Skills

In professional life, technical expertise may open doors, but it is often negotiation skills that determine how far someone progresses. Whether people are discussing salaries, resolving disputes or trying to reach agreement on deadlines, the ability to negotiate can make the (0) DIFFERENCE between success and frustration. Good negotiators do not simply insist (1) .......... getting what they want; they also listen carefully and try to understand the other side’s priorities. This allows them to build trust and find solutions that both parties can (2) .......... with. In many cases, a successful outcome depends not only on confidence but also on preparation. Entering a discussion without having thought through possible objections is rarely a sound (3) .......... . Skilled negotiators also know when to stand firm and when to make a concession, since pushing too hard can (4) .......... the relationship altogether. Another essential quality is clarity. If your message is vague, the other person may come (5) .......... with a completely different understanding of what was agreed. For this reason, strong negotiators tend to sum up key points and confirm them in writing. In the long (6) .......... , these habits save time, prevent conflict and improve cooperation. For anyone hoping to take (7) .......... greater responsibility at work, negotiation is therefore not an optional extra but a skill worth (8) .......... .

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
