Exam Preparation

For many advanced learners, preparing for a high-level English exam is not simply a matter of studying harder; it also involves becoming familiar with the logic of the test itself. Candidates who are already fluent often come to realise that success depends as much on strategy as on language ability. A good course will therefore not only revise grammar and vocabulary, but also draw attention to the patterns that exam tasks are designed to (0) TEST. In the multiple-choice cloze, for instance, students are expected to recognise fixed expressions, collocations and subtle differences in meaning. Many initially rely on instinct alone, but this can (1) .......... to careless mistakes when several options appear possible. Teachers often advise learners to read beyond the gap and consider the wider context, as the correct answer may depend on a phrase that (2) .......... elsewhere in the sentence. It is also useful to keep a record of errors, since recurring problems can reveal gaps in one’s knowledge. Some students, however, are put (3) .......... by the level of detail involved and begin to doubt their ability. This is unfortunate, because steady practice usually leads (4) .......... noticeable improvement. In fact, candidates who review their mistakes systematically are far more likely to build (5) .......... confidence. By exam day, the aim is not perfection, but the ability to make well-judged choices under pressure and avoid being (6) .......... by plausible distractors. Ultimately, success lies in combining linguistic knowledge with the kind of discipline that allows good habits to become second (7) .......... . With enough exposure to authentic tasks, even the most demanding paper can become less intimidating and more (8) .......... .

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
