Reaching a TOEIC Goal

For many learners, preparing for a language exam is not simply a matter of revising vocabulary; it also involves building a strategy and maintaining motivation over time. If your current level is around B2 to C1 and you scored 820 in a previous TOEIC attempt, you already have a solid foundation to build (0) ON. The challenge now is to identify the areas that may be holding you back and work on them in a systematic way. Many candidates make progress at first, but then their improvement seems to level (1) .......... because they rely too heavily on general practice rather than targeted preparation. A high TOEIC score usually depends (2) .......... consistent exposure to the exam format, as well as careful attention to timing. It is also essential to carry (3) .......... regular review of errors, since careless mistakes can easily lower an otherwise strong result. Some students focus only on practice tests, whereas others devote time to building up weaker language areas, such as collocations and listening stamina. Ideally, you should aim (4) .......... a balance between the two approaches. In the final weeks before the exam, confidence can make a significant (5) .........., especially if you have already shown that you are capable of performing well. With enough discipline, an 820 score can serve not as a limit, but as a stepping stone (6) .......... a stronger result. What matters most is not sudden improvement, but steady progress and the willingness to learn (7) .......... every attempt. In that sense, success is often the result of a plan that students actually manage to stick (8) ..........

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
