The Value of Reading

Reading is often treated as a quiet pastime, but its effects can be surprisingly far-(0) REACHING. People who read regularly tend to build a wider vocabulary, develop greater sensitivity to tone and argument, and become better equipped to deal with complex ideas. In a world full of short messages and constant distractions, reading also offers a rare chance to slow down and reflect. Many people claim they do not have time to read, yet they may spend hours scrolling through material they barely remember afterwards. By contrast, a good book often leaves a more lasting (1) .......... on the mind. Reading fiction, in particular, can (2) .......... the reader into unfamiliar worlds and ways of thinking, while non-fiction can deepen knowledge and sharpen judgement. Both forms demand attention and reward patience. Another benefit is that reading helps people (3) .......... sense of complicated issues. Even so, not everyone finds reading easy at first. Some texts are demanding, and it may take time to (5) .......... into the habit. Still, the effort is usually worthwhile. The more widely people read, the more they are (6) .......... to encounter viewpoints that challenge them. In that respect, books do not simply entertain; they also (7) .......... our understanding of ourselves and others. For that reason, reading should not be seen as a luxury, but as a skill of lasting (8) .......... .

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
