The Most Common Exercise

Ask a group of people what the most common form of exercise is and you’ll probably get answers like running or going to the gym. Yet, in (0) FACT, the activity most of us do every single day is far less glamorous: walking. It’s so (1) .......... that we rarely count it as exercise at all, even though it can have a measurable impact on health. One reason walking is often (2) .......... is that it doesn’t require special equipment or a membership fee. You can (3) .......... it into your routine by getting off the bus a stop early or taking the stairs instead of the lift. Over time, these small choices (4) .......... up, especially if you make them a habit. Of course, not all walking is equal. A gentle stroll won’t necessarily (5) .......... your fitness, but a brisk pace can raise your heart rate and improve stamina. The key is consistency: if you (6) .......... to it, you’re far more likely to see results than if you exercise intensely once a month. So, rather than (7) .......... for the perfect workout plan, it may be wiser to start with what’s already available. Walking is easy to (8) .......... up, hard to overcomplicate, and surprisingly effective.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
