Digital Catch-Up

For many older adults, the pace at which technology develops can be difficult to keep (0) UP with. Devices, apps and online services are updated so frequently that people who were once perfectly confident with everyday routines may suddenly feel left (1) .......... . What makes matters worse is that instructions are often written with younger users in (2) .........., assuming a level of familiarity that not everyone has. As a result, some older people are reluctant to carry (3) .......... using digital tools unless a friend or relative is nearby to help. This can have serious consequences, since essential services such as banking, medical appointments and travel bookings are now increasingly carried (4) .......... online. Although many older users are willing to learn, they may be put (5) .......... by technical language, security warnings and the fear of making an expensive mistake. Yet when proper support is available, they often adapt remarkably well and gain a sense of independence. What they need is not sympathy, but training that is practical, patient and clearly (6) .......... out. If society fails to take their needs (7) .......... account, the digital divide will continue to widen. Bridging that gap is not simply a matter of convenience; it is a way of ensuring that older generations are not unfairly (8) .......... from modern life.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
