Funding Discovery

Scientific progress rarely happens by accident. Behind every medical breakthrough, environmental solution or technological advance lies years of careful work, much of which depends on stable financial support. Yet research funding is often treated as a luxury rather than a long-term investment. When budgets are cut, projects may be delayed, talented scientists may leave the field, and valuable data may be lost. Supporters of public investment argue that research does more than (0) DRIVE innovation; it also strengthens economies and improves quality of life. New treatments, cleaner energy and safer infrastructure often (1) .......... from studies whose practical value was not obvious at first. For that reason, governments are frequently urged to (2) .......... funding even during difficult economic periods. Critics, however, sometimes question whether all research offers immediate benefits. This view tends to (3) .......... the fact that major discoveries often emerge unexpectedly. A project that appears highly theoretical may later (4) .......... the basis for a life-changing invention. In addition, reliable funding helps institutions plan ahead and carry (5) .......... complex investigations without constant interruption. In the end, scientific research is not simply a matter of curiosity. It is a resource on which modern societies increasingly (6) ........... Without sustained support, progress slows and opportunities are missed. If governments fail to invest wisely now, future generations may (7) .......... the price. That is why research funding should be seen not as an expense, but as a commitment (8) .......... the future.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
