Team Dynamics

The psychology of teamwork has become a major area of research because success in groups depends on far more than simply putting talented people together. In fact, a team may be made (0) UP of highly skilled individuals and still perform badly if trust is missing. Researchers point out that effective teams do not just divide tasks; they also build a shared sense of purpose that members can (1) .......... with. When this happens, individuals are more likely to put personal ambition (2) .......... in order to achieve a common goal. Another key factor is communication. In high-functioning teams, people feel able to speak (3) .......... without fear of ridicule, and disagreement is not automatically seen as a threat. On the contrary, constructive conflict can lead to better decisions, provided that criticism is (4) .......... at ideas rather than people. Psychologists also stress the importance of roles. Unless responsibilities are clearly (5) .......... out, confusion can quickly arise and damage morale. Perhaps most importantly, successful teams develop resilience. When setbacks occur, they do not immediately (6) .......... blame on one another. Instead, they reflect on what went wrong and look for ways to improve. Over time, this creates a culture in which members feel valued and are willing to (7) .......... in extra effort. In that sense, teamwork is less about avoiding weakness than about learning how to (8) .......... on one another’s strengths.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
